good regional course. Greens are small, staff is friendly, and a good deal on most week days.

The course was in excellent condition (particularly the fairways). Our group of seniors really appreciated the fact they now have a men's rating for the forward tees. Only downside was on a hole or two our uphill putts came back to us. We will be back this summer.

Played Goose Creek Golf Club Thursday, 8-19-10,as a first-timer. Rack rate is $42 (which I think is too much). We paid $30 using the Tee Time Book, only to find out later that we could've paid a $28 Senior Rate, if the guy in the pro shop had been conscientious about treating customers fairly. BTW, he wore a name tag identifying himself as the head pro. Anyway, the experience was kinda mixed, and we probably won't go back. Comments from previous rater are valid, especially about the changes in the layout in the last year or two: note to Golf GPS owners, your system may have not been updated to reflect these changes, at least the iGolf database has not. The readings for holes 2,3,4,and 5 are wrong.

The course itself is fairly compact, with many parallel fairways, but some interesting vistas. Fairways are generally fairly narrow, and with some side-slope to them. Greens are on the small side, with some tilt, but only a few have any tiering. A fair number of bunkers, and a good bit of water. Conditions today were so-so: lots of rain in the previous 48 hours, so it was cart-path-only, and not much movement once a ball touched down. Tee boxes were OK, fairways were generally good, with only a few soggy spots. Greens held well, but were pretty slow. Several greens had bad spots/strips in them. Bunkers were horrible; very firm and eroded from the precip.

Because of the tight layout, there is plenty of opportunity to field shots from adjacent fairways, and in some cases, cart paths are in direct line of oncoming tee shots (check out the path from the #3, par 3 green, to the #4 tee box). A couple of quirky things: on #7, there is a water hazard directly behind, and within six feet of, the back of the green: a back pin placement invites overshooting (as I did), with no hope of staying dry. #10 is pretty straightforward, except the fairway has a serious side slope from right-to-left: hard to keep a ball in the short grass there.

I thought the layout was too tight for comfort, or that it could be during periods of heavy play: we pretty much had the course to ourselves today, so that may say something about its acceptance by locals (we came down from Maryland because we wanted to play something different).

Course is probably not walkable for seniors due to elevation changes and distance between some greens and tees. Clubhouse is nice and well-maintained, and the few staff we encountered were competent and friendly (except for the little detail about the fees).

I can't really recommend the course, though if I lived closer, I might be inclined to give it another shot. As it is, I'd categorize it a "C" level course, and would suggest you consider spending your golf dollar and leisure play time elsewhere.

Two problems: 1. There is no driving range and no room for one. 2. The state took a corner of the property eliminating a par three. The course is being redesigned to fix this. There are three holes affected on the front nine, two out of play and one par 4 reduced to a par three. Number 2, a par 5, has been moved back and is completely rebuilt with new bunkers and a sculpted fairway. Number 3 is new and a par 3 and to be the new signature hole. Both have the creek in play, although for number 2 the creek threat is greatly reduced. The new holes should be ready for play by July. The management allows you to play 18 by replaying 2 holes. This course has a history that belays it's current state. Many local golfers won't play it because of its past. I don't know why but this reputation brings out some of the idiot golfers that don't know manners or don't care. So weekends can be trying unless you get there early. The grounds keepers are spectacular. They keep the course as well as any, including the higher priced courses, and are extremely flexible regarding golfers playing through. I love playing this course for its challenge and condition. I just wish there was a practice area.
